Oak Ship’s Wheel house and sliding hatch.

This Oak wheel house was made traditionally using mortice/tenon joints, solid shaped oak beams and Fir Tongue and groove for the roof, and will also have bronze port holes . It is to be fitted to a square rigged Tall Ship  (‘Kaskelot’) and will replace the existing one which is being scrapped. The ship has been undergoing a very large restoration/refit.

As part of the job we were also asked to make this high quality traditional companion way with sliding hatch and lockers. Fitted above galley and heads, it will help ventilation and provide access down below.

Approximately 4 tons of air dried European oak were used to manufacture those 2 pieces of naval joinery.
